“Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold”
S.E. Hinton‘s landmark novel ‘The Outsiders’ celebrated 50 years of staying gold in 2017; we thought it seemed fitting to revisit this classic story – and Francis Ford Coppola’s timeless film – with a prime time screening of THE OUTSIDERS on Tuesday, June 27.
Hinton co-wrote the screenplay, making for a faithful adaptation of the highly lauded book’s (a summer reading list staple!) sensitive depiction of various aspects of teen angst, from the pitfalls of young love to the complexities of high school’s vicious socio-economic structure. THE OUTSIDERS is often regarded as one of the best “teen dramas” ever made, in no small part to a remarkably solid young cast of baby-faced actors who would all later ascend to “household name” status, including C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Leif Garrett and Tom Waits.

THE OUTSIDERS (Francis Ford Coppola, 1983 / 91 mins / PG) | A teen gang in rural Oklahoma, the Greasers are perpetually at odds with the Socials, a rival group. When Greasers Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) and Johnny (Ralph Macchio) get into a brawl that ends in the death of a Social member, the boys are forced to go into hiding. Soon Ponyboy and Johnny, along with the intense Dallas (Matt Dillon) and their other Greaser buddies, must contend with the consequences of their violent lives. While some Greasers try to achieve redemption, others meet tragic ends.
