Join us at the Rio Theatre as we pay tribute to the late, great Canadian rock icon and social activist Robbie Robertson with a #MusicMonday screening of director Martin Scorsese‘s legendary rock documentary THE LAST WALTZ, on September 11.
Seventeen years after joining forces as the backing band for rockabilly cult hero Ronnie Hawkins, Canadian roots rockers The Band called it quits with a lavish farewell show at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on Nov. 25, 1976. Universally hailed as one of “the best concert films ever made,” THE LAST WALTZ chronicles this final performance, and features standout performances from rock legends including Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell and Muddy Waters, as well as interviews tracing the group’s history and discussing road life.
A musical delight that is as fresh today as it was upon its release, the film features The Band’s members (including Robertson, Levon Helm, and Rick Danko) as well as over a dozen special guests like Paul Butterfield, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Hawkins, Dr. John, Ronnie Wood, Neil Diamond, Bobby Charles, The Staple Singers, and more.
“Simply one of the best rock docs ever, born of equal parts thunder and fatigue.” (Toronto Star)
“It’s arguably the most beautiful of rock movies, while the musical highlights – ‘The Weight’ with the Staples Singers, Van Morrison’s firebolt ‘Caravan’, every Levon Helm vocal – still astound.” (Time Out)
“This 1978 labour of love, one of the most immaculately filmed rock concerts, preserves for posterity the final appearance of the Band, the great group led by Robbie Robertson that had been on the road (often with Bob Dylan) for 16 years.” (Observer)
