“Kiss my Converse!”
Looking for… The Glow? Join us at the Rio Theatre on Saturday, August 28 for a screening of Berry Gordy‘s cult-classic THE LAST DRAGON. Like a comic book come to B-movie life, THE LAST DRAGON is an action-filled pop-culture fantasy fairy tale, mining elements of martial arts and blaxploitation films (with their tropes turned up to eleven, and oh-so-liberally messed with).
Leroy Green, a young martial artist living in New York City, trains tirelessly to attain the same level of mastery as the great Bruce Lee. One night, his life changes forever when he rescues television personality Laura Charles from evil businessman Eddie Arkadian. Impressed by Leroy’s bravery, Laura falls for Leroy — but to keep her safe, he will have to defeat a gang leader named Sho’nuff, the self-styled Shogun of Harlem. Starring Taimak, Vanity, Chris Murney, Julius Carry.
“‘The Last Dragon’ is first and foremost a romantic comedy, and a very sweet one at that, and that’s why its martial-arts combat scenes work so well. We’ve been given enough time to care about who’s kicking the stuffing out of whom.” (Gene Siskel)
“It is crammed with kung-fu, singing, rapping, dancing and video art, and no moment goes by without at least three of these things transpiring simultaneously.” (New York Times)
“The transcendent part… As silly a movie as it is, ‘The Last Dragon’ handles the issue of race with a deftness that not many movies have ever pulled off.” (Shea Serrano)
“Motown’s attempt at maintaining relevancy in the mid 80’s resulted in a Kung Fu musical aimed towards the Hip-Hop generation.” (Dart Adams)
