Join us at the Rio Theatre on Thursday, July 15 as we tip our collective hat and raise a glass to the late, great Richard Donner, a filmmaker who brought us so many of the titles that we love – including one of the most iconic superhero action movies ever made, SUPERMAN.
Featuring Christopher Reeve‘s pitch-perfect performance in a role that would ultimately come to define his career, SUPERMAN deftly blended the humor and gravitas from its source material into a film that is escapist and fun, a nostalgic slice of pop-culture Americana. Arguably, the success of Donner’s SUPERMAN – which spawned its own highly successful franchise – remains a foundational blueprint for all the (many) superhero adaptations that would eventually come in its wake. Starring Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, Terence Stamp, and Marlon Brando.
“Richard Donner’s ‘Superman’ broke new cinematic ground. Visually it’s stunning, and that’s before you take into the account the special effects – most of which still hold up today!” (Movies in Focus)
“It’s the simple, earth-bound quality of the film that makes this comic-book fantasy soar.” (Washington Post)
