POSTPONED Sound of Metal

Music was his world. Then silence revealed a new one.

Dearest Rio Friends & Movie-Lovers: As per the government’s latest directive on November 23, 2020, we will be suspending operations until December 8, 2020 (barring any further changes). Screenings will be re-scheduled, and ticket-holders will be contacted shortly. In the meantime, we thank-you for your endless generosity and boundless support. Don’t worry – we’ll be firing up the projector as soon as we can! In the meantime, keep calm, stay kind, wear a mask, wash your hands, and stay safe out there. – The Rio Theatre

Ruben (Riz Ahmed) and Lou (Olivia Cooke, ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL, TV’s ‘Bates Motel’) live together, two nomads traveling gig to gig on an endless American tour. Their music is loud, frenzied and passionate, until one day Ruben is overwhelmed by a severe ringing in his ears – which quickly gives way to deafness.

Suddenly overcome by anxiety, and depression, his past addictions begin to surface, so he checks himself into a home for deaf addicts run by an eccentric deaf veteran, Joe. In this world of silence and under Joe’s tough, observant care, Ruben must confront himself more honestly than ever before. But the love and sound of his old life echoes in his mind, calling for him to return… With Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff and Mathieu Amalric.

“An evocative look at the experiences of the deaf community, Sound of Metal is brought to life by Riz Ahmed’s passionate performance.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“‘Sound of Metal’ injects visceral, edgy circumstances with remarkable sensitivity.” (IndieWire)

“Without romanticizing deafness, ‘Sound of Metal’ makes a case for acceptance and for embracing the inevitability of unpredictable change.” (Hollywood Reporter)

“Documentary and music video camera genius Daniël Bouquet combines his two interests to give the film a naturalistic, almost fly-on-the-wall feel, but everything is really in service of the sound design.” (Austin Chronicle)

“‘Sound of Metal’ is made to make us care by design-its trick is in how it pulls us along to experience all of the ups and downs with our leading man, wringing us all out by the film’s end.” (The Young Folks)
