Other Music
Much more than a beautiful lament for the passing of New York’s beloved East Village indie record store Other Music, Puloma Basu and Rob Hatch-Miller’s special film is movingly emblematic of the factors destroying what many of us care about deeply: affordable, culturally enriched urban civilization and actual encounters with human beings who share our interests.
As this film goes deep, it also becomes an excellent exploration of the many ways that the love of music and the pursuit of individuated culture and community are important to not just the urban landscape, but to so many people’s lives and souls as well. The implicit and explicit rejection of the directions our world is taking are increasingly well articulated by the many people – including both staff and customers of the store – featured here, and, this being New York, the fact that they can be joined by the thoughts of (and some performances from) great artists, like Yo La Tengo, Bill Callahan, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, and more, make this film an exceptional example of its kind.
Tickets: Tickets will be available at the box office of each venue once the festival is up and running or online through the VIFF site.
