Reel Causes is thrilled to present MY DADS, MY MOMS, AND ME, a film that follows three BC families on their parenthood journey.

In her 2007 documentary FATHERHOOD DREAMS, Julia Ivanova chronicled the touching and challenging journeys of four gay men who each made the decision to become parents after Canada legalized same-sex marriage. Married couple Randy and Drew adopted baby Jack. Scott connected with a surrogate to have twins Ella and Mac. Stephen decided to co-parent his daughters Jazz and Zea with lesbian couple Coreen and Wendy.

Fast forward twelve years — MY DADS, MY MOMS, AND ME revisits the lives of these men and their children, now teenagers.

Incorporating clips from the original doc with contemporary interviews and scenes of daily lives, the film provides an intimate look at the obstacles and triumphs of these three queer families.

There will be a post-film Q&A with filmmaker Julia Ivanova and some of the family members featured in the film, along with a representative from community cause Pflag.

Proceeds from Pflag ticket purchases will go directly to Pflag. We will accept both Reel Causes tickets and Pflag support tickets at the door.

MY DADS, MY MOMS, AND ME (Julia Ivanova, 2019 / 85 mins / PG) Twelve years ago, three gay fathers, two lesbian mothers and five children let the camera into their lives and shared their stories of adoption, co-parenting and surrogacy. These three very personal stories were filmed just several years after same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada. The camera returns to three families in 2018, in an attempt to find unbiased answers to questions that continue to be relevant: To what extent the upbringing in non-traditional families impacts a child? Have societal outlooks on non-traditional family structures changed in Canada since 2003?
