“Accentuate the negative.”

Adapted from Daniel Clowes‘ (who also co-wrote the screenplay) cult-hit graphic novel, director Terry Zwigoff‘s (Crumb) Ghost World is a refreshingly funny, satiric, and sweetly honest take on the coming-of-age trope, centering on two “ultra-hip” yet very frank young women on the cusp of impending adulthood. At a time when besties Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) are faced with inevitable life decisions accompanying their graduation from high school, they are also forced to take a hard look at the world they so wryly observe – and decide what it is they really want, and who they want to be. Things take a change for the girls and their friendship after Enid plays a prank on the older, offbeat, slightly nerdy Seymour (Steve Buscemi) and begins to develop a serious and rather unexpected interest in him while Rebecca focuses her attention on their mutual romantic fixation Josh (Brad Renfro). Also starring Illeana Douglas and Bob Balaban.

“With acerbic wit, Terry Zwigoff fashions Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel into an intelligent, comedic trip through deadpan teen angst.”Rotten Tomatoes

“By sharp turns poignant, disturbing and hysterically funny.”The Georgia Straight

“Zwigoff pulls off something in Ghost World that seems a minor miracle — he creates someone with a complex inner life.”LA Weekly
