Dirty Harry

Detective Harry Callahan. He doesn't break murder cases. He smashes them.

“You’ve got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky?”

Clint Eastwood stars as Dirty Harry Callahan, a no-holds-barred San Francisco cop in this action thriller that began an action franchise–Dirty Harry. Harry doesn’t break murder cases – he smashes them.

When he is assigned to pay extortion money to a serial murderer, the payoff goes wrong. Now with the life of a 14-year-old girl at stake, Callahan refuses to allow anything–including the law–to keep him from stopping the killer.

“Its star’s growling charisma demands to be enjoyed.” (Times UK)

“The message, finally, is the least important part of the film; the medium, and the artist’s command of it, is the real message. And [director] Don Siegel has never been more in command of it than here.” (Times UK)

“A crisp, beautifully paced film, full of Siegel’s wonderful coups of cutting and framing.” (Chicago Reader)

“No less than Don Siegel’s ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers,’ it offers a fabulous, multifarious political metaphor. (And, as with ‘Body Snatchers,’ Siegel’s own liberal interpretation was trumped by a more forceful hard-right reading.” (Village Voice)

“Director Don Siegel’s classic sci-fi flick ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ was alternately read as both right-wing (anti-Commie) and left-wing (anti-McCarthyism), and he found his controversial police thriller experiencing the same sort of dichotomy.” (Film Frenzy)
