Sean Connery and Charlotte Rampling star in director John Boorman‘s Zardoz, an ambitious futuristic sci-fi-drama-romance about a savage resident of a dystopic 23rd-century Earth who becomes involved in a revolution after discovering the hidden truth about society’s rulers. Connery (in a seriously steep costume downgrade from his stint as 007) plays Zed, a rebel member of the Exterminators, a band of skilled assassins who exact a reign of terror over the lesser Brutals. The Exterminators answer only to their god, a gigantic stone image known as “Zardoz.” Haunted by doubt about Zardoz’s true divinity, Zed chooses to investigate, only to learn that Zardoz is just a fraudulent tool of the Eternals, a secret society of brilliant immortals who pretend to divinity in order to exploit the masses. Knowing the truth, Zed sets out to reveal the hoax and destroy the Eternals’ unjust rule…

ZARDOZ (John Boorman, 1974 / 105 mins / 18A) | In the future, Earth is ruled by Eternals, an advanced and secret sect of beings who reign over a savage group called Brutals. The Eternals have created a god named Zardoz to intimidate the Brutals, making them believe that killing is their natural state. However, Zed (Sean Connery), a Brutal warrior, challenges that assumption when he enters the Zardoz monument and is captured by an Eternal (Charlotte Rampling). There, he learns the truth about the Eternals and the false god that rules society.
