David Cronenberg’s Videodrome (40th Anniversary Screening)

First it controls your mind. Then it destroys your body.

Canadian auteur David Cronenberg occupies a very special place in all of our hearts – and minds. His catalogue of films is both varied and unique – offerings ranging from straight-up splatter to bodice-ripping costume dramas – and are frequently requested from our dedicated core of regular Rio Theatre audience members.

In this seminal example of “Cronenberg-esque” horror sci-fi, James Woods stars as Max Renn, the president of a trashy TV channel, who is desperate for new programming to attract viewers. When he happens upon “Videodrome,” a TV show dedicated to gratuitous torture and punishment, Max sees a potential hit and broadcasts the show on his channel. However, after his girlfriend (the always sexy and slightly kinky Deborah Harry) auditions for the show and never returns, Max investigates the strange truth behind Videodrome and discovers that the graphic violence may not be as fake as he thought. Also starring Sonja Smits.

“Visually audacious, disorienting, and just plain weird, VIDEODROME‘s musings on technology, entertainment, and politics still feel fresh today.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“There’s little denying that Cronenberg was way ahead of his time with much of VIDEODROME.” (FEARnet)
