There Will Be Blood

There Will Be Greed. There Will Be Vengeance.

“There’s a whole ocean of oil under our feet… No one can get at it, except for me!”

Loosely based on Upton Sinclair‘s novel Oil! is writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s utterly magnificent epic THERE WILL BE BLOOD, starring Daniel Day-Lewis (in an Oscar-winning performance) as a ruthless oil prospector, is as much a historical drama as it is a very relevant and contemporary commentary on 21st century consumerism, family values, religious dogma, wealth, greed, and isolation. Anderson’s work is a revelatory modern masterpiece with the stylish production value of old-school Hollywood; an edgy, comples opus featuring sweeping visuals (Robert Elswit rightly deserved his Best Cinematography Oscar), a phenomenally atonal (not to mention anachronistic) score courtesy of Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead), and a stellar turn from Paul Dano.

“Day-Lewis, no ifs, ands or buts, gives one of the great elemental performances in modern cinema.” (Rolling Stone)

“This is a dark, uncompromising film, thrillingly original and distinctive, with a visionary passion. It is a movie against which all directors, and all moviegoers, will want to measure themselves. Paul Thomas Anderson is doing something new with cinema, and you can hardly ask for more than that.” (The Guardian)

THERE WILL BE BLOOD (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2007 / 158 mins / 18A) When ruthless oil prospector, Daniel Plainview learns of oil-rich land in California that can be bought cheaply, he moves his operation there and begins manipulating and exploiting the local landowners into selling him their property. Using his young adopted son to project the image of a caring family man, Plainview gains the cooperation of almost all the locals with lofty promises to build schools and cultivate the land to make their community flourish. Over time, Plainview’s gradual accumulation of wealth and power causes his true self to surface, and he begins to slowly alienate himself from everyone in his life.
