“Wanna get weird?” So begins a night of drug-fuelled redneck revelry that results in one man meeting a particularly grisly end – the details of which serve as the film’s central mystery – and leaving his bandmates/best buds Zeke (Michael Abbott Jr.) and Earl (Andre Hyland) to haplessly conceal the depraved details of his fatal “misadventure” from their increasingly inquisitive families, Dick’s distraught wife (Jess Weixler), and the hilariously feckless local authorities (Janelle Cochrane and Sarah Baker). As the cover-up and criminal investigation rival one another other for ineptitude, the film masterfully ratchets up both the absorbing tension and absurd comedy.

Alabama-born-and-raised director Daniel Scheinert’s follow-up to instant cult classic Swiss Army Man initially assumes the form of a note-perfect deadpan farce that plays like a southern-fried Fargo. The entire ensemble is completely dialed in to the deeply weird frequency that Scheinert is broadcasting on here, their tonally nimble performances allowing the film to seamlessly reshape itself of an oddly affecting, undeniably sincere ballad that leaves us convinced that “people sure are inscrutable on their insides.”

“A symphony of stupidity… A delirious and entertaining dumbs**t backwoods noir.” – Bilge Ebiri, Vulture
