Featuring Christopher Reeve‘s pitch-perfect performance in a role that would ultimately come to define his career, SUPERMAN deftly blended the humor and gravitas from its source material into a film that is escapist and fun, a nostalgic slice of pop-culture Americana. Arguably, the success of Donner’s SUPERMAN – which spawned its own highly successful franchise – remains a foundational blueprint for all the (many) superhero adaptations that would eventually come in its wake. SUPERMAN (Richard Donner, 1978 / 143 mins / PG) Just before the destruction of the planet Krypton, scientist Jor-El sends his infant son Kal-El on a spaceship to Earth. Raised by kindly farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent, young Clark discovers the source of his superhuman powers and moves to Metropolis to fight evil. As Superman, he battles the villainous Lex Luthor, while, as novice reporter Clark Kent, he attempts to woo co-worker Lois Lane.
