Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris

Ground control has been receiving strange transmissions from the three remaining residents of the Solaris space station. When cosmonaut Kris Kelvin (Donata Banionis), a widowed psychologist, is sent to investigate the death of a colleague and the dwindling mental state of the remaining crew. Upon arrival he begins to experience the strange phenomena that afflict the Solaris cosmonauts, sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his own consciousness.

Based on the novel by the same name from Polish author Stanislaw Lem, legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky‘s creation (winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival), is a brilliantly original science-fiction epic that challenges our conceptions about love, truth, and humanity itself.

“The film has a hypnotic pull, drawing the viewer deeper and deeper into its enigmatic adventure by crafting a world all its own.” (LA Times)

Tarkovsky‘s speculative visions enfold the mysteries of death and rebirth, the lost paradise of childhood, the power of art to define identity, the menace of science as destructive vanity …” (The New Yorker)

“More an exploration of inner than of outer space, Tarkovsky’s eerie mystic parable is given substance by the filmmaker’s boldly original grasp of film language and the remarkable performances by all the principals.” (Chicago Reader)
