“You were f***ing Tessa Campanelli?”

Believe it or not, it’s been 25 years since the iconic, generation-shaping original Degrassi series came to a stunning finale with SCHOOL’S OUT!, one of the most watched Canadian TV movies ever made. Beyond being one of the most unforgettable series finales ever, it gained eternal notoriety for the shocking outcomes of the characters’ lives and for featuring the first use of the “F” word on Canadian broadcast TV.

The Rio Theatre is beyond thrilled (and high-fiving our inner-90s kids!) to celebrate the monumental 25th Anniversary of this touchstone of Canadian pop-culture in style, with original cast members Pat Mastroianni (Joey Jeremiah!) and Stacie Mistysyn (Caitlin Ryan!) in attendance.

For anyone who didn’t grow up in Canada: “The Kids of Degrassi Street” begat “Degrassi Junior High” which begat “Degrassi High”, and was unique inasmuch as these series following the same castmembers over many years as they grew up before our collective, national eyes. The shows broke new ground by featuring actual teen-aged actors and real-life, modern issues – with long-term consequences. Through six seasons, the cast faced abortion, drugs, pregnancy, racism, suicide, and STDs, but also dating woes, generational conflicts, bullies, crushes, rock concerts, sleepovers, and, of course – The Zit Remedy. Finally the gang graduated, and the show sent them off with this 1992 TV movie that begins with a big start of summer party, but eventually spirals way, way, way out of control…
