Santa Sangre

Forget Everything You Have Ever Seen.

Fifteen years after EL TOPO and THE HOLY MOUNTAIN unlocked moviegoers’ collective third-eye, legendary provocateur Alejandro Jodorowsky made his late-’80s comeback with the SANTA SANGRE, a film whose staggering odyssey of ecstasy, anguish, belief, blasphemy, beauty and madness enraptures both Jodo newbies and dedicated fans alike. Fully restored to an inky sheen, this evocative tale follows the a young circus performer, the crime of passion that shatters his soul, and a macabre journey – back to the world of his armless mother.

“The first thing to say about Alejandro Jodorowsky‘s SANTA SANGRE is that it is an incredibly beautiful work of art: a feverishly redemptive and illuminating conflation of the heart’s creaking sounds and the unadorned, naked soul in all its grotesque splendour. The second thing is that this is quite a remarkable feat for a film which depicts such cheery topics as murder, castration, implied incest, mental disorders, suicide and all manner of circus freakery. Loosely based on the story of a famous Mexican serial killer, Gojo Cardinas, this is Jodorowsky’s most complete feature, a hyperreal pilgrimage through the corpus of chaos towards the edge of paradise.” (The Quietus)

“To call SANTA SANGRE a horror film would be unjust to a film that exists outside all categories. But in addition to its deeper qualities, it is a horror film, one of the greatest… I am reminded by Alejandro Jodorowsky that true psychic horror is possible on the screen–horror, poetry, surrealism, psychological pain and wicked humor, all at once.” (Roger Ebert)

“Visionary and haunting, SANTA SANGRE is a mixture of blood poetry and gobbledygook that keeps springing astonishingly to life.” (Rolling Stone)

SANTA SANGRE (Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1989 / 123 mins / 18A / In Spanish with English subtitles.) A young man is confined in a mental hospital. Through a flashback we see that he was traumatized as a child, when he and his family were circus performers: he saw his father cut off the arms of his mother, a religious fanatic and leader of the heretical church of Santa Sangre (“Holy Blood”), and then commit suicide. Back in the present, he escapes and rejoins his surviving and armless mother.
