Rock ‘n’ Roll High School (40th Anniversary Screening!)

Will your school be NEXT?

Hey, ho… Let’s go!

Well, maybe you don’t care about history (cause that’s not where you want to be), but you really should care about the Rio’s 40th Anniversary screening of one of the greatest high school musical comedies ever made – ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGH SCHOOL! Produced by the iconic Roger Corman and starring P.J. Soles (HALLOWEEN, CARRIE) as teen punker Riff Randall, this slice of 70’s Americana is a joyous, sugar-fueled love letter to teenage rebellion and Mad Magazine-styled surrealism, and features the big screen debut of punk rock pioneers the Ramones at their peak. Even better? We’ll be screening AGFA‘s gorgeous new digital transfer. With Vincent Van Patten, Clint Howard.

“A bonafide love letter to the punk juggernauts that ruled music in the 70’s and 80’s.” (Cinema Crazed)

“Teen punkette Riff Randall (P.J. Soles of CARRIE and HALLOWEEN) has one abiding fantasy: to meet the dreamy Ramones, and get them to perform one of her songs. Standing in her way is Principal Togar (Warhol star Mary Woronov), who runs Vince Lombardi High like a despot — until the boys from Forest Hills lead a student body putsch and rock the school down to its foundations. A tribute to the after-school bedroom sexual awakening, when one daydreams of Joey joining you in the shower.” (Metrograph)

“Director Allan Arkush channels Frank Tashlin and the smartass spirit of Mad Magazine throughout the film, transforming his love letter to rock ’n’ roll and the eternal allure of being a teenager at war with parents into a live-action cartoon filled with giddily surreal touches. In reality, Ramones fandom was a small, specific, eccentric niche. But in Rock ’N’ Roll High School, the Ramones are as big as The Beatles.” (The Dissolve)

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGH SCHOOL (Allan Arkush, 1979 / 93 mins / PG) Vince Lombardi High School continues to lose its school principles. The students are more concerned with rock ‘n’ roll than their education until the new principle, Miss Evelyn Togar is hired. She promises to set Vince Lombardi High School straight, and get the students focus back on education. However, a Ramones concert is coming to town, and Riff Randall, the biggest Ramones fan at the high school, plans on getting tickets to the concert in order to give them a song that she wrote entitled “Rock N’ Roll High School”. A series of events including Miss Togar taking away Riff’s tickets, a record burning and a taking over of the school…
