Cagefest 2020: Raising Arizona

Their lawless years are behind them. Their child-rearing years lay ahead...

“Edwina’s insides were a rocky place where my seed could find no purchase.”

Cagefest – our (unofficial) Nicolas Cage Film Fest (aka, NIFF), a solid 5 days’ worth of our fave performances from one of our all-time favourite contemporary actors – continues on Friday, October 9, with an encore screening of his game-changing performance in the Coen Brothers‘ quirky 1987 comedy, RAISING ARIZONA.

This sweet, screwball cult comedy tells the unlikely, absurd story of ex-con H.I. (Cage) and ex-cop Edwina (Holly Hunter) who meet, marry and long for a child of their own. When it is discovered that H.I. is unable to have children, they decide to snatch a baby from local furniture tycoon Nathan Arizona, who has been blessed with quintuplets. They try to keep their crime a secret, while friends, co-workers and a bounty hunter look to use the child for their own purposes. With Trey Wilson, John Goodman, William Forsythe and Frances McDormand.

“A terrifically original, eccentric screwball comedy, RAISING ARIZONA may not be the Coens’ most disciplined movie, but it’s one of their most purely entertaining.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“Starting from a point of delirious excess, the film leaps into dark and virtually uncharted territory to soar like a comet.” (Time Out)
