Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Loving the trees, speaking to insects, the bird people who fly on the wind...

There is no better way to appreciate the magic of Studio Ghibli than on the big screen! Movie-lovers of all ages adore animated classics from Japan’s famed Studio Ghibli, and Hayao Miyazaki‘s NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, based on the director’s own epic science fantasy fairytale adventure manga (1982-1994), is one of our most requested titles. Released in 1984, the film is often considered to mark the “beginning” of Studio Ghibli, as it was one of their first films to really reach a wide audience and has since become one of the highest ranked animated films ever made.

Taking place in a post-apocalyptic world in the far future, the film tells the story of Nausicaä (Sumi Shimamoto), the young princess of the Valley of the Wind. She becomes embroiled in a struggle with Tolmekia, a kingdom that tries to use an ancient weapon to eradicate a jungle of mutant giant insects, and attempts to stop the Tolmekians from enraging these creatures. Also featuring the voices of Goro Naya, Yoji Matsuda, Yoshiko Sakakibara and Iemasa Kayumi. *Please note this film screens in Japanese with English subtitles.

“It’s not only an amazing piece of animation, but an incredible work of science-fiction as well.” (Cinematical)

“When mammoth dandelions puff out spores, the sight is as seductive as it is lethal.” (The New Yorker)

“Nausicaä is in some ways a grim and serious film, but it mixes a sweet optimism into its horror-filled lessons.” (The AV Club)

NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND “Kaze no Tani no Naushika” (Hayao Miyazaki, 1984 / 117 mins / PG / Eng subs) Nausicaä, a gentle young princess, has an empathetic bond with the giant mutated insects that evolved in the wake of the destruction of the ecosystem. Traveling by cumbersome flying ship, on the backs of giant birds, and perched atop her beloved glider, Nausicaä and her allies must negotiate peace between kingdoms battling over the last of the world’s precious natural resources.
