Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love (Final Screening)

MARIANNE AND LEONARD: WORDS OF LOVE is renowned filmmaker Nick Broomfield‘s (WHITNEY: CAN I BE ME, KURT & COURTNEY) most personal and romantic film of his storied career. The documentary starts on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Leonard Cohen, then a struggling and unknown fiction writer, and Marianne Ihlen, a single mother with a young son, became part of community of expat artists, writers and musicians. Never-before-seen footage shot by both Broomfield and the late, legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker make for a unique portrait of an idyllic 1960’s bohemia. It was a time that left a lasting imprint on both Marianne and Leonard, whose friendship would last another fifty years, before their deaths in 2016.

“An absorbing glimpse of a fascinating chapter of its subjects’ lives.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“A moving portrait of love, as much poetry as documentary.” (The Wrap)

“Nick Broomfield’s riveting documentary gives us a vivid snapshot of the early 1960s and a complicated, mysterious love story.” (The Guardian)

“This is an insider’s fascinating meditation on the nature of genius and stardom and the toll they take on the naively optimistic.” (Chicago Reader)

“With a softened lens, British documentarian Nick Broomfield adoringly examines a fascinating relationship in a fascinating time that saw Cohen transition from a poet to a world-class songwriter.” (Globe and Mail)
