Love & Friendship

A lady never reveals her tactics.

Indie mainstay Whit Stillman (Metropolitan, The Last Days of Disco) pulls of a fantastic about-face with his latest feature, Love & Friendship. Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Xavier Samuel and Stephen Fry star in this charming period comedy-drama based on Jane Austen’s little-known novella “Lady Susan.”

As beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon (Beckinsale) visits the estate of her in-laws to wait out the colourful rumors about her various dalliances circulating through polite society, she is determined to make a successful match for her daughter Frederica — and herself too, of course. In doing so, she attracts the simultaneous attentions of the young, handsome Reginald DeCourcy, the rich and silly Sir James Martin and the divinely handsome (but married, naturally!) Lord Manwaring, complicating matters severely.

Love & Friendship is Jane Austen with the romance drained out, exposing the pragmatism and the economic urgency underneath. That sounds grim, but the result is actually a tart, fizzy delight from Metropolitan director Whit Stillman.”Buzzfeed

Love & Friendship is quick, clever and delightful, very funny and hugely entertaining.” – Toronto Sun
