Les Misérables

Inspired by the 2005 riots in Paris, French writer-director Ladj Ly’s stirring LES MISERABLES follows Stéphane (Damien Bonnard, STAYING VERTICAL), a recent transplant to the impoverished suburb of Montfermeil, joins the local anti-crime squad. Working alongside his unscrupulous colleagues Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Gwada (Djebril Zonga), Stéphane struggles to maintain order amidst the mounting tensions between local gangs. When an arrest turns unexpectedly violent, the three officers must reckon with the aftermath and keep the neighborhood from spiraling out of control. LES MISERABLES was selected to compete for the famed Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize, and would later secure France an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature.

“‘Les Misérables’ transcends its unwieldy story with compelling ideas and an infectious energy that boils over during a thrilling final act.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“[Ladj Ly’s] film is best when it immerses us in small moments and naturalistic performances, propelled by Pink Noise’s electronic score.” (Globe and Mail)

“[Director Ladj Ly] has as much sympathetic grasp of the law-enforcement side as he does of the polyglot population. Ly leavens the grit with deft, dark humor.” (The Georgia Straight)

LES MISERABLES (Ladj Ly, 2019 / 102 mins / 14A / French with English subs) Stéphane, has recently joined the Anti-Crime squad in Montfermeil, a sensitive district of the Paris projects. Paired up with Chris and Gwada, whose methods are sometimes unorthodox, he rapidly discovers the tensions between the various neighborhood groups. When the trio finds themselves overrun during the course of an arrest, a drone begins filming every move they make.
