Citizen Jane: Battle For The City

Documentary CITIZEN JANE: BATTLE FOR THE CITY is a timely tale of what can happen when engaged citizens fight the power for the sake of a better world. Arguably no one did more to shape understanding of the modern American city than Jane Jacobs, the visionary activist and author of “The Death and Life of Great American Cities,” who fought to preserve urban communities in the face of destructive development projects. Here, she fights against the ruthless, destructive redevelopment projects of urban planner Robert Moses. Director Matt Tyranuer (VALENTINO: THE LAST EMPEROR) vividly brings to life Jacobs’ 1960s showdown with the construction kingpin over his plan to raze lower Manhattan to make way for a highway, a dramatic struggle over the very soul of the neighborhood.

“The movie is scored like a thriller, seemingly building to some terrifying conclusion. And, in a way, it does …” (The Washington Post)

“A celebration of grassroots activism and a cry for community, this should appeal to those interested in the history and politics of urbanisation as well as architecture nerds.” (UK Observer)

“Tyrnauer transforms what could be a staid profile film into an urgent story about the dangers of “urban renewal,” something Jacobs herself would admire.” (L.A. Weekly)
