Casino (25th Anniversary Screening!)

No one stays at the top forever.

Join us at the Rio Theatre as we celebrate Martin Scorsese‘s “birthday week” with a 25th Anniversary screening of the classic 1995 mob epic CASINO. The film was adapted from celebrated crime writer Nicholas Pileggi’s “Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas,” a non-fiction depiction of the story behind the alliance of Mafia mobsters Lefty Rosenthal and Tony Spilotro, and their exploits working in Mafia-controlled casinos in Las Vegas.

Set in early-1970s Las Vegas, the film centers on low-level mobster Sam “Ace” Rothstein (Robert De Niro) who gets tapped by his bosses to head the Tangiers Casino. At first, he’s a great success in the job, but over the years, problems with his loose-cannon enforcer Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci), his ex-hustler wife Ginger (Sharon Stone), her con-artist ex Lester Diamond (James Woods) and a handful of corrupt politicians put Sam in ever-increasing danger.

It may not be Scorsese’s greatest work, but this guy feeling a little off-colour is still far, far better than most people on fighting-fit form. It only gets more impressive as times goes on. (Empire Magazine)

New York bookie and pal build Vegas casino empire. Dazzling, stylish Scorsese.” (The NYTimes)

“Martin Scorsese’s intimate epic about money, sex and brute force is a grandly conceived study of what happens to goodfellas from the mean streets when they outstrip their wildest dreams and achieve the pinnacle of wealth and power.” (Variety)
