A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

In an Oscar-nominated performance, Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in director Marielle Heller‘s (CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME) A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of the real-life friendship between legendary TV icon Fred Rogers, and investigative journalist Tom Junod. Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (THE AMERICANS) stars as jaded investigative journalist Lloyd Vogel, who is assigned by Esquire to  profile Fred Rogers. Their meeting and friendship changes his life, and he overcomes his skepticism while learning about empathy, kindness, and decency from America’s most beloved neighbor. With Chris Cooper, Susan Kelechi Watson.

“This is a movie that’s both entertainment and spiritual toolkit-take from it what you need.” (TIME Magazine)

“Even if you think Rogers’ psychological model is simplistic, you can’t help but climb aboard.” (NPR)

“No less than Morgan Neville’s lovely documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” feels like a beam of kindness at a moment that profoundly needs it.” (LA Times)

“It’s not only Mister Rogers’s kindness that hovers over ‘Beautiful Day,’ but also his creative spirit. Paying tribute to his skills as a composer, performer and puppeteer, the movie affirms his status as a hero of the imagination.” (New York Times)

A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD (Marielle Heller, 2019 / PG / 110 mins) Lloyd Vogel is an investigative journalist who receives an assignment to profile Fred Rogers, aka Mr. Rogers. He approaches the interview with skepticism, as he finds it hard to believe that anyone can have such a good nature. But Roger’s empathy, kindness and decency soon chips away at Vogel’s jaded outlook on life, forcing the reporter to reconcile with his own painful past.
