You Were Never Really Here

Bring the hammer

When an unfinished version of Scottish director Lynne Ramsay‘s (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN) neo-noirish adaptation of writer Jonathan Ames‘ suspenseful crime thriller YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, it netted awards for both Best Screenplay (Ramsay) and Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix). In another dark, powerful performance, Phoenix stars here as a traumatised, jaded veteran and former FBI agent named Joe, who tracks down missing and trafficked girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe’s nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered – leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening. At times moody (thanks to an original score  from Radiohead‘s Jonny Greenwood) and violent, this dark thriller has drawn comparison to and finds itself somewhere between TAXI DRIVER and TAKEN.

“Bracingly elevated by a typically committed lead performance from Joaquin Phoenix, YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE confirms writer-director Lynne Ramsay as one of modern cinema’s most unique — and uncompromising — voices.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“We do not deserve Lynne Ramsay.” (The Globe and Mail)

“Undeniably gripping, a tightly wound contraption of nervous energy, grief, and gore.” (Vulture)

“Joaquin Phoenix has never been shy about going big if the role called for it — and maybe even if the role didn’t necessarily call for it — but his performance here ranks as one of his best because of what happens between the outbursts.” (Chicago Sun-Times)
