Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
“If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Anything you want to, do it; Want to change the world… there’s nothing to it.”
Join us at the Rio Theatre on April 15 & 17, and enter a candy-coated “world of pure imagination.” As British author Roald Dahl‘s beloved CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is a classic of children’s literature, so too is director Mel Stuart‘s scrumpdidlyumptious musical adaptation, WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, a classic of cinema (not to mention a delicious treat for movie-lovers of all ages!).
In a career of standout performances, Gene Wilder gives what may be his signature turn as the eccentric, enigmatic (and occasionally acerbic) emperor of the world’s greatest candy empire who stages a fantastic, global search to locate his lucky successor. There is something truly magical about Wilder‘s endearing portrayal of the mysterious man on a quest to find a deserving “heir apparent.”
Enter young Charlie, a sweet boy from a poor family who dreams of finding one of Wonka’s five “golden tickets” hidden inside chocolate bar wrappers – thereby gaining him to the reclusive “sugarmeister,” and his magical factory. One after another, tickets are discovered by ghastly children – but will Charlie find the last remaining one, and have all his dreams come true…?
“Probably the best film of its sort since ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ It is everything that family movies usually claim to be, but aren’t: Delightful, funny, scary, exciting, and, most of all, a genuine work of imagination.” (Roger Ebert)
