When Strangers Re-Unite (With Filmmaker Q&A)

It’s a story of sacrifice, separation — and the strength it takes to reunite.

Each year, thousands of Filipina women come to Canada as domestic workers, leaving behind their own families to care for others. When Strangers Re-Unite follows three families as they navigate the emotional and cultural challenges of reuniting after years of separation. Set in Toronto, Montreal, and the Philippines, the film is a moving portrait of resilience, love, and the power of community.

Through its exploration of separation and healing, the film amplifies the voices of migrants confronting loss and advocating for justice.

The film’s powerful focus on the sacrifices of migrant workers reminds us of the urgent need to strengthen our community. This screening also serves as a call to action to fight for justice, healing, and accountability for the Lapu-Lapu tragedy.

The screening takes place just after the 40 days of mourning for the Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy — a meaningful time to reunite, honour the lives lost, and begin to heal. It will be an evening of remembrance, reflection, and shared strength.

Proceeds will be for the benefit of the Kapwa Strong Fund, a fund organized by United Way BC to provide counselling and trauma services for families affected by the Lapu-Lapu festival events.

Following the screening, join us for a live Q&A with filmmaker Marie Boti and Filipino community organizers working at the front lines of migrant justice in Canada.

Presented in partnership with Migrante BC

Migrante BC is a grassroots, community-based, non-profit organization led and powered by volunteer migrants for the Filipino community in British Columbia.
