“That techno-rock you guys listen to is gutless.”
Join us at the Rio Theatre on Friday, May 12 for a totally awesome 40th Anniversary screening of Martha Coolidge‘s 80’s drenched, coming-of-age romantic comedy about a girl from the valley meeting and dating a punk from the city, VALLEY GIRL. As relevant a commentary about urban teen angst today as it was upon its release, the film is notable for its sweet story, iconic soundtrack, and the breakthrough performance from its charismatic anti-hero, Nicolas Cage. (Although Cage had appeared in small roles in films like FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, it was his turn here that, like, totally put him on our radar, ya know?)
Lovely teen Julie Richman (Deborah Foreman) is steeped in the excessive, pink-clad culture of the San Fernando Valley, complete with her narcissistic boyfriend, Tommy (Michael Bowen). At a party, however, Julie falls for an edgy Hollywood punk named Randy (Cage), and the two begin an unlikely romance. Torn between fitting in with her superficial friends and embracing a more non-conformist lifestyle, Julie ultimately has to decide to stay with Tommy or take a risk with Randy.
“This movie is a little treasure, a funny, sexy, appealing story of a Valley Girl’s heartbreaking decision: Should she stick with her boring jock boyfriend, or take a chance on a punk from Hollywood?” (Roger Ebert)
“This is one of the great teen romance movies.” (Austin Chronicle)
“Director Martha Coolidge turned a short-lived fad into a genuine sleeper, an exploitation film that thoroughly transcends its origins to become a highly appealing romantic comedy.” (Chicago Reader)
