Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

One of the most talked about films from this year’s Academy Awards (who could ever forget Frances McDormand‘s Best Actress acceptance speech?!) is finally coming to the Rio Theatre, starting April 23. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a darkly comic drama from Oscar-winner Martin McDonagh (IN BRUGES). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (two-time Oscar winner McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson, in an Oscar-nominated turn), the town’s revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell, who took home Oscar gold his his performance), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing’s law enforcement is only exacerbated. Also starring Peter Dinklage, Abbie Cornish, Lucas Hedges, Caleb Landry-Jones, John Hawkes, and Clarke Peters.

Martin McDonagh has freighted THREE BILLBOARDS with a tragedy that allows the performers — primarily Frances McDormand — to play to their range.” (The New York Times)

Martin McDonagh knows how to get good characters into a story but not always how to get them out of it. This time he’s considerably more focused, letting Frances McDormand‘s ferocious mother-bear of a performance, her best since Fargo, drive the narrative.” (Toronto Star)

“‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri‘ is just the bitter pill the times call for, offered with a loving cup to make it go down just a bit easier.” (Washington Post)
