A fresh and distinctive take on Charles Dickens’ semi-autobiographical masterpiece, THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD, set in 1840s Britain, chronicles the life of its iconic title character as he navigates a chaotic world to find his elusive place within it. From his unhappy childhood to the discovery of his gift as a storyteller and writer, David’s journey is by turns hilarious and tragic, but always full of life, colour and humanity.
Emmy® winners and Oscar® nominees Armando Iannucci (IN THE LOOP, THE DEATH OF STALIN, HBO’S VEEP) and Simon Blackwell (IN THE LOOP, HBO’S SUCCESSION) lend their wry, yet heart-filled storytelling style to revisiting Dickens’ iconic hero on his quirky journey from impoverished orphan to burgeoning writer in Victorian England. Starring Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw , Gwendoline Christie.
“A sincere affection for and understanding of the source material shines through in its wit and good nature.” (Entertainment Weekly)
“Crafting a don’t-miss movie out of Charles Dickens’ 1850 doorstop of a novel, Amando Inannicci and a sublime cast, led by a never-better Dev Patel, add a blast of mad, modern irreverence that is totally irresistible.” (Rolling Stone Magazine)
“Nimble, appealing and attuned to the nuances of Dickens’ spirit, Patel is a good Copperfield for today, a bright young man who’s able to overcome adversity and go far.” (TIME Magazine)
