The Notebook

Behind every great love is a great story.

“Stop thinking about what everyone wants, stop thinking about what I want, what your parents want! What do you want Allie?”

Hey girl… We tried to think of the most romantical Monday night double features we could think of, so we settled on LA LA LAND paired with Nick Cassavetes‘ modern classic THE NOTEBOOK… You know, that one with our favourite Canadian onscreen pairings e-ver, our always and forever imaginary boyfriend Ryan Gosling + our imaginary bestie Rachel McAdams.

In 1940s South Carolina, mill worker Noah Calhoun (Gosling) and rich girl Allie (McAdams) are desperately in love. But her parents don’t approve. When Noah goes off to serve in World War II, it seems to mark the end of their love affair. In the interim, Allie becomes involved with another man . But when Noah returns to their small town years later, on the cusp of Allie’s marriage, it soon becomes clear that their romance is anything but over. With James Marsden, James Garner, Gena Rowlands, Joan Allen.

THE NOTEBOOK (John Cassavetes, 2004, 123 mins) | An epic love story centered around an older man who reads aloud to an older, invalid woman whom he regularly visits. From a faded notebook, the old man’s words bring to life the story about a couple who is separated by World War II, and is then passionately reunited, seven years later, after they have taken different paths. Though her memory has faded, his words give her the chance to relive her turbulent youth and the unforgettable love they shared.
