Thanklessly attempting to earn the acceptance of her scornful soon-to-be stepchildren (Jaeden Martell and Lia McHugh, seemingly born to play these bad seeds) over the Christmas holidays, Grace (Riley Keough) incurs their wrath instead. Putting into motion an immaculately orchestrated scheme intended to convince Grace that she’s cracking like the thin ice on the lake outside their secluded cabin, the hellions instead unearth the barely repressed anguish, mental instability, and violent impulses that fester just under the placid surface of this sole survivor of a suicide cult.
Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala follow up the Oscar-nominated Goodnight Mommywith another exquisitely calibrated thriller that’s unrepentantly sinister and dead set on shaking audiences to the core. The technical precision on display here is astonishing, with seemingly every member of the production team having signed an unholy pact to summon forth dark cinematic forces and ensure that no one who witnesses this emerges unscathed.
“[An] atmospheric mindf**k… A truly unsettling movie, the kind of horror film that rattles you on an almost subconscious level…” – Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
