Spring Breakers

A little sun can bring out your dark side.

The Rio Theatre’s Friday Late Night Movie series continues on May 12 with Harmony Korine‘s SPRING BREAKERS.

Four frustrated college girlfriends (Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine) plot to fund their best spring break ever by burglarizing a fast-food shack. But that’s only the beginning. During a night of partying, the girls get arrested. Hungover and clad only in bikinis, the girls appear before a judge and get bailed out unexpectedly by Alien (James Franco), an infamous local dealer who takes them on the wildest spring-break trip in history.

“A trippy, florescent whirl of boobs and bongs.” (US Weekly)

“Whether [it] is a great movie or an uncommonly accomplished bit of fraudulence is an ‘eye of the beholder’ thing, but there’s something to be said for a film that somehow captures and enshrines an era’s attention-deficit aesthetic…” (The Ringer)

“Behind the film’s vacuous candy-colored outer shell are ambiguous and morally challenging concepts.” (Bitch Media)

“It’s campy and comic at times, but Korine also gives the film a downbeat, melancholic edge, with voiceovers, pointed repetition of dialogue and images, and hallucinatory camera work, sound and editing.” (Time Out)

“Neon bright and all raw energy, Spring Breakers is a pulsating paradox of a movie, both a tangerine dream and a cultural reality check, a pop artifact that simultaneously exploits and explores the shallowness of pop artifacts.” (Globe and Mail)

With the encouragement of their new friend, it soon becomes unclear how far the girls are willing to go to experience a spring break they will never forget.
