The most personal project to date from Academy Award-winning writer-director Alfonso Cuarón (GRAVITY, CHILDREN OF MEN, Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN), ROMA follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio, in an Oscar-nominated performance), a young domestic worker for the family of Antonio, Sofia (Oscar nominee Marina de Tavira), and their four children in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City. Complications soon arise when Antonio suddenly runs away with his mistress, and Cleo finds out that she’s pregnant. When Sofía decides to take the kids on vacation, she invites Cleo for a much-needed getaway to clear her mind and bond with the family.
Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst political turmoil of the 1970s. ROMA has been universally, critically received and won numerous international awards and accolades, including Academy Awards for Best Director, Cinematorgraphy (Cuarón) and Best Foreign Language Film.
“Alfonso Cuarón has done more than break through walls of language, culture and class to craft the best movie of the year.” (Rolling Stone Magazine)
“Pairing thrilling technical prowess with profound artistic vision, Alfonso Cuarón has made a masterpiece, at once understated and otherworldly. We need more filmmakers like him.” (Empire Magazine)
“An epic of tearjerking magnificence… A triumphant blend of tragedy, comedy and absurdity.” (Guardian)
