One From The Heart: Reprise (4K Restoration)

When Francis Ford Coppola makes a love story… don't expect hearts and flowers.

Francis Ford Coppola‘s ONE FROM THE HEART is an unabashedly grand, even even eccentric musical tribute to the power of love. Released in 1982, the film gained a certain notoriety inasmuch that it marked such a stylistic and thematic departure from the virtuoso auteur’s established oeuvre. Panned by some as a “flop” and revered by others, the film features incredible visuals and unexpected musical numbers as well as a memorable, Oscar-nominated score from Tom Waits.

Hank and Frannie argue while celebrating their fifth anniversary. Yearning for a life of excitement and romance, Frannie fears that she is wasting her life on a man who shows no interest in her dreams of traveling to far-off places. The argument escalates and they break up. Heading in separate ways and taking to the streets, they both meet and spend the night with strangers. Hank with the seductive Leila a runaway circus performer, and Frannie with Ray, a handsome waiter who moonlights as a cocktail pianist and singer. With Frederic Forrest, Teri Garr, Raoul Julia, Nastassja Kinski, Lainie Kazan, Harry Dean Stanton.

The restoration, supervised by Francis Ford Coppola, was made in 4K by American Zoetrope and Roundabout Entertainment in the US. The 4K scans were lifted from the original camera negative, and great efforts have been made to add thirteen minutes of original camera negative, restoring opticals and dupe negative. The restoration was approved by Francis Ford Coppola himself, as six minutes of IP were added to replace the original negative that was thought to be destroyed in a flood in Rome where the negative was kept.

“”[Of Coppola’s films] it is this one that stirs and dazzles me the most and reminds me of why I fell in love with the movies in the first place.” (Peter Sobczynski, RogerEbert.com)

““One from the Heart” is a pivotal film in Coppola’s career, one that vastly expanded the range of his art… A movie that takes a drastic and original approach to the very notion of character, to the essence of subjectivity in cinema.” (New Yorker)

“There’s plenty to enjoy here, especially the sparkling emotional openness of Teri Garr, who is a terrific natural dancer and seems always to be dancing, even when she isn’t.” (Guardian UK)

“There’s not a moment in ‘One From the Heart’ when Mr. Coppola isn’t after something romantic and glorious, something inexpressibly grand. At times, he even gets what he’s after.” (New York Times)
