Modern Times

He stands alone as the greatest entertainer of modern times! No one on earth can make you laugh as heartily or touch your heart as deeply...the whole world laughs, cries and thrills to his priceless genius!

Join us at the Rio Theatre on Sunday, April 16, as we tip our (bowler) hat to filmmaker Charlie Chaplin – on what would have been his 124th birthday – with a family-friendly screening of MODERN TIMES.

A pioneering master of physical comedy in the silent era, Chaplin’s legendary genius is on full display in this (mostly) silent film, which also marked his final onscreen performance as his iconic character, the Little Tramp. MODERN TIMES finds the Tramp put to work as a giddily inept factory employee who becomes smitten with a gorgeous gamine (Paulette Goddard). With its barrage of unforgettable gags and sly commentary on class struggle during the Great Depression, MODERN TIMES – though made almost a decade into the talkie era and containing moments of sound (even song!)—is a timeless showcase of Chaplin’s abilities as a director of silent comedy.

“What most amazes you about ‘Modern Times,’ is the fact that, in this day of superfine sound films, it says everything without saying anything.” (Chicago Tribune)

“The 20th century in 87 minutes.” (Sight and Sound)

A slapstick skewering of industrialized America, Modern Times is as politically incisive as it is laugh-out-loud hilarious.” (Rotten Tomatoes)
