Mile End Kicks: VIFF 2025

Summer, 2011. Twenty-two-year-old music critic Grace (Euphoria’s Barbie Ferreira) moves from Toronto to Montreal’s vibrant Mile End neighbourhood with the goal of writing a book about Alanis Morissette’s iconic album Jagged Little Pill. But when a loft party introduces her to the underground indie rock band Bone Patrol, Grace falls head over feet for both Chevy (Stanley Simons), the band’s self-absorbed lead singer, and Archie (Devon Bostick), the sweet and mysteriously celibate lead guitarist. To get closer to them, Grace offers up her services as their publicist, all but forgetting about her manuscript.

Pitted against an exploitative former boss (Jay Baruchel), Ferreira steals the show as our endearingly flawed, lost but hopeful heroine in this heartfelt story about finding one’s voice as a writer on the margins of a male-dominated creative industry. Featuring two catchy original songs from Montreal indie band TOPS, this quirky romantic comedy from Chandler Levack (I Like Movies, VIFF 2022) has all the makings of an instant hit.
