Mean Streets (50th Anniversary Screening)

You don't make up for your sins in church. You do it in the streets...

Join us at the Rio Theatre on Thursday, July 20 for a 50th Anniversary, encore screening of Martin Scorsese’s 1973 gritty crime drama, MEAN STREETS.

Released to widespread critical acclaim, MEAN STREETS is a slice of street life in Little Italy centred on lower echelon Mafiosos, unbalanced punks, and petty criminals. The film established Scorsese as a singular cinematic force to be reckoned with, and stars out of Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel.

“In countless ways, right down to the detail of modern TV crime shows, ‘Mean Streets’ is one of the source points of modern movies.” (Roger Ebert)

“Mean Streets is a movie so rich in content, so teaming with talent both in front of and behind the camera, that the temptation is to go on and on about it. A better idea would be to simply urge you to go see it. It speaks for itself.” (Los Angeles Free Press)

“If a movie can be faulted for packing in a little too much realism, this is definitely one of them. But, you know, cinema isn’t always about being comfortable.” (Decider)

“The movie’s blazing energy is still astounding; the vrit street-scenes are terrific and Scorsese’s pioneering use of popular music is genuinely thrilling.” (Guardian)

“‘The Godfather’ made the mob glamorous. ‘Mean Streets’ made it real. Martin Scorsese’s ferocious, grimy 1973 classic is just as good as Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece, but it shows us criminal life lower down the food chain.” (BBC.com)
