Lords of Dogtown (20th Anniversary Screening)

They came from nothing to change everything.

Join us at the Rio Theatre for the third installment of a series presented in partnership with Antisocial AV Club, featuring a 20th anniversary screening of Catherine Hardwicke’s LORDS OF DOGTOWN.

Before the movie, head on down to China Creek for an old school skate jam! Prizes for Best Dressed, Best Old School Trick and Highest Fly Out will be awarded on stage later at the Rio Theatre…

Legendary pro-skateboarder and surfer Stacy Peralta took inspiration from his own experiences as a former “Z-Boy,” and penned the script for the film, which offers a dramatic re-telling of the origin and rise of the Dogtown days. A heavy drought in 1970s Southern California has an unexpected side effect: as people emptied their swimming pools, a group of teen surfers from the Dogtown area of Venice Beach move in with skateboards, and a new sport is born. Based on a true story, this film follows the up-and-coming skate team as their fearless pool surfing leads to fame, fortune — and misfortune. With Heath Ledger, Emile Hirsch, John Robinson, and Victor Rasuk.

“It’s a thrashing good time.” (Seattle Times)

“The movie is like a daydream, and it’s most infectious when the characters are in motion or misbehaving, which is often.” (Boston Globe)
