High Fidelity #MusicMonday

A comedy about fear of commitment, hating your job, falling in love and other pop favorites.

Top Five Anti-Romance Romantic Comedies Set in a Record Store… Go.

The Rio Theatre is embracing the Valentine’s Day-ish spirit with a #MusicMonday screening of the 2000 slacker comedy HIGH FIDELITY. Adapted from Nick Hornby‘s novel (he also co-penned the script) of the same name, director Stephen Frears deftly balances the source material’s wry, sarcastic and occasionally sorrowful humor with genuine laugh out loud moments courtesy of an endlessly charming ensemble cast – and a truly killer soundtrack.

Rob Gordon (John Cusack) is the owner of a failing record store in Chicago, where he sells music the old-fashioned way — on vinyl. Although they have an encyclopedic knowledge of pop music and are consumed by the music scene, it’s of no help to Rob, whose needle skips the love groove when his long-time girlfriend, Laura (Iben Hjejle), walks out on him. As he examines his failed attempts at romance and happiness, the process finds him being dragged, kicking and screaming, into adulthood. With Jack Black, Joan Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tim Robbins, Lili Taylor, Sara Gilbert, and Lisa Bonet.

“You’re still smiling when the film is over.” (Rolling Stone Magazine)

“Movies this wry and likable hardly ever get made.” (Roger Ebert)

“Despite its cynical gloss on romance, ‘High Fidelity’ is a sweet sentimental tale, remixed for audiences who think they’re too smart for schmaltz.” (Sight & Sound)

“Romantic sorrow — and the self-reflexive dramas it inspires — have rarely been this funny.” (San Francisco Chronicle)
