Fucktoys: VIFF 2025

Abandon me harder daddy.

AP just found out that — according to multiple psychics — she’s cursed. Even worse, if she wants to lift it she’s gonna have to sacrifice a baby lamb and come up with a grand in cash. Trashtown, USA, offers plenty of chances to do some pretty messed up stuff for a few bucks, so AP sets off on her scooter to make some money. Enter Danni (Sadie Scott), AP’s former flame, whose face is seemingly always bloodied and banged up. Together, they embark on an increasingly absurd reimagining of The Fool’s Journey.

Step aside Anora, there’s a new bad bitch in town. Writer, director, and star Annapurna Sriram serves charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent in this sexy, campy throwback to sexploitation classics. Shot in glowing 16mm and buzzing with the no-f*cks-given energy of John Waters and Gregg Araki, Fucktoys is unapologetic in every way — a transgressive indie freak-out with an exquisite cinematic style. More than just pastiche, Sriram is reclaiming power, changing the rules, and giving the finger to a system built on exploitation.

VIFF thanks the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations for their continued stewardship of the unceded and occupied land on which our work takes place. As an organization founded and predominantly directed by settlers and immigrants, we understand our responsibility to seek out and build authentic relationships with Indigenous communities, and to allow this ongoing dialogue to influence our practices. As part of this process, we remain committed to collaborating with and supporting Indigenous artists, filmmakers, curators, and audiences.

Part-time sex worker, full-time chaos magnet, AP is convinced that the universe has it out for her… and she might be right. She decides on seeking a cosmic reset after a tarot reader floating in a swamp tells her she needs $1,000 and a sacrificial lamb to lift her curse. Armed with neither, she meets up with her long-lost kindred spirit Danni, and together the two moped off on a bizarre quest through Trashtown USA — a dystopian, neon-drenched sprawl of strip clubs and urban decay, stocked with a series of assorted oddballs, Tom of Finland cops, and some all-too-familiar type clients. Fucktoys is rude, crude, unhinged, girlypop middle finger to filmic convention, and a comedic calling card for anyone who finds themself asking the question: am I cursed???
