Fly Me To The Moon (w. pre-recorded Director Q&A)
This summer, STArt Film Studio presents Dear Home, a touring showcase of acclaimed Chinese-language films. For our Vancouver stop, we are proud to co-present this program with the Rio Theatre, inviting you to look closely once more at the moments of love and parting. As the places we grew up in drift further away, how do our memories, attachments, and the delicate mending of family ties find their way back? We hope these cinematic letters from the silver screen bring comfort to anyone who still finds themselves longing for somewhere else.

Moving from Hunan to Hong Kong at age eight, Yuen confronts a reality far from her dream home—marked by poverty, cultural barriers, and her father’s destructive drug habit. As she and her younger sister grow from quiet appeasement in childhood to resistance and escape in adolescence, Yuen eventually realizes that everyone she loves and treasures bears the inescapable shadow of her father. A profound, decades-spanning reflection on childhood memory, identity crisis, and the complicated nature of affection.

“Fly Me to the Moon isn’t just well-acted and well-written. Its greatest strength lies in its visual storytelling. Long takes, a fixed camera, and a restrained use of close-ups create a less deliberate, more meditative tone compared to most American melodramas.” (nadamucho.com)
“Despite appearances, Fly Me to the Moon isn’t a tragic tearjerker; Yuen and Kuet aren’t anyone to pity. There’s a clear-eyed matter-of-factness about the story that makes it as observational as it is reflective. After all, these sisters could have moved from Hawaii to Tokyo, from Damascus to Toronto, or from Durban to Adelaide and many of the same issues would rear their ugly heads. Chuk’s film is universal in that aspect, but it’s the personal touch that gives the film its emotional heft – that and a strong cast that makes everyone empathetically real rather than archetypical. Not bad for a first time. Let’s hope there’s a second.” (kai-fong.com)
