Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn

The Rio Theatre’s Friday Late Night Movie series continues on August 29 with horror icon Bruce Campbell (so groovy, baby!) starring in Sam Raimi‘s glorious horror comedy EVIL DEAD II: DEAD BY DAWN, which burst on to the scene in 1987 – shocking audiences with gore and laughs for more than 35 years since! This “parody” sequel, the second of the iconic trilogy franchise, has also been gore-geously remastered in a frightfully crisp 4K restoration.

After playing a recording of the Book of the Dead found in a seemingly abandoned cabin in the woods and unleashing an evil force that possesses his girlfriend, Ash is forced, once again, into a macabre battle for his life against horrifying demons. After discovering an audiotape left by a college professor that contains voices reading from the Book of the Dead, Ash’s girlfriend Linda (Denise Bixler) becomes possessed by evil spirits that are awakened by the voices on the tape. Ash soon discovers there is no escaping the woods.

“Rampant inventiveness and manic energy have ensured that it will endure as a cult classic.” (A.V. Club)

“A ghoulish splatter comedy that uses wildly excessive gore to provoke the kind of shock that lies between a laugh and a scream.” (Dave Kehr)

“Just when things start getting too grisly, Raimi rushes in with a hilarious, sendup joke to remind us that all this blood and guts is meant in spooky Grand Guignol fun.” (Los Angeles Times)

“Evil Dead 2’s increased special effects and slapstick-gore makes it as good — if not better — than the original.” (Rotten Tomatoes)
