Through a series of vignettes – some tragic, some funny, all a little bizarre – the unique animated feature documentary ENDLESS COOKIE explores the complex bond between two half brothers, one Indigenous, one white, spanning bustling 1980s Toronto to the present day isolated First Nations community of Shamattawa.
The film’s distinct, hand-drawn illustrations (courtesy of co-director Seth Scriver) offer their own surreal style, creating a humorous and often bizarre depiction of the brothers’ lives, punctuated by everyday sounds, and the voices of their families and pets. ENDLESS COOKIE delves into their contrasting upbringings by exploring themes of identity, race, and Indigenous resistance to colonization.
“A zany, rambling, bustling portrait of a big family’s cramped, loving, chuckling life in icy Shamattawa.” (AV Club)
“As Seth burns through a pile of public money to his brother’s stories, the adventure provides a cathartic laugh. The film shares the importance of humour in keeping a community spirit alive and healthy.” (POV Magazine)
“Underneath the lowbrow fart jokes and images of caribou mating, the Scrivers’ “Endless Cookie” honors the legacy others left behind through their experiences so that it can help each new generation piece together their understanding of the embattled present.” (Variety)
This film is screening as part of National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada.
