Emma (1996)

Cupid is armed and dangerous!

December 16 marks literary icon Jane Austen’s 250th birthday, and we’re teaming up with The Jane Austen Society of Vancouver to celebrate her enduring legacy with a double bill featuring two beloved (and very different!) cinematic adaptations of her classic romantic novel, “Emma” featuring screenings of EMMA and CLUELESS.

In this 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, pretty socialite Emma Woodhouse (Gwyneth Paltrow) entertains herself by playing matchmaker for those around her. Her latest “project” is Harriet Smith, an unpretentious debutant, while Emma herself receives the attentions of the dashing Frank Churchill (Ewan McGregor). However, Emma’s attempts at matchmaking cause more problems than solutions and may ultimately jeopardize her own chance at love and happiness. With Jeremy Northam, Toni Collette, Alan Cumming, Sophie Thompson, and Pollie Walker.

“Suddenly you remember how merciless and cutting Austen’s satire can be, even in the brutal ’90s.” (Washington Post)

“Gwyneth Paltrow makes a resplendent Emma, gliding through the film with an elegance and patrician wit that bring the young Katharine Hepburn to mind.” (New York Times)

“This has enough smooches and visual jests Austen never thought of to add up to a very sweet and pretty romp.” (Empire Magazine)

Emma Woodhouse is a congenial young lady who delights in meddling in other people’s affairs. She is perpetually trying to unite men and women who are utterly wrong for each other. Despite her interest in romance, Emma is clueless about her own feelings, and her relationship with gentle Mr. Knightley.
