Stupid Co and the Rio Theatre presents the third annual OFF-VIFF – a platform for the underground. Featuring the West Coast premieres of Avalon Fast and Jillian Frank’s DRINKING AND DRIVING, Louise Weard’s celebrated CASTRATION MOVIE CHAPTER III, and local wrestling doc ENEMIES: A TALE OF FRIENDSHIP. Plus, a very special screening of Wayne Wappemukwa’s newest project to hit screens, MANHUNT.

Early twenties Iris (Jillian Frank) and Palmer (Avalon Fast) never left their hometown. They work at the same restaurant, share the same bed, and both have a habit of drinking and driving. They run into Levi (Ethan Hawksworth), a guy they used to know. They spend time with him and his cousin, Phoenix (Henri Gillespi), in cars, backyards, and other people’s bedrooms. When Levi shares a dream he had with Iris, things change between the four of them. The reality of the summer becomes faded, the parties die. The four end in a field of unified confusion.

Summer’s over and all it was was grey skies and looking for the next twisted tea to shotgun. DRINKING AND DRIVING captures the wonderfully dreadful stuckness of living in the lacuna that people call “out here.” A meditation on the depths of interconnectedness in the samsara of rural BC. Oh, and it’s the funniest films we’ve seen all year.

ABOUT OFF-VIFF

OFF-VIFF was created in 2024 by filmmaker Arran Shearing, and supported by Stupid Co.’s Kyle Greenberg and Anna Maguire with the idea of platforming local films in ways the other Vancouver festivals weren’t doing. We wanted to remind our fellow filmmakers (and ourselves) that we didn’t need permission to play our films in the city we’re from. Now, three years in, we try to program a different vision of what a BC film can be. Through our fun and subversive festival selections we hope to inspire filmmakers and audiences to expand their ideas of what makes a successful film.
