Nicolas Roeg‘s acclaimed supernatural thriller DON’T LOOK NOW is as much a surrealistic ghost story as it is a meditative exploration on grief, told through the experiences of a married couple. Noted for its innovative use of imagery and colour (and a legendary love scene featuring the late, great Canadian icon Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie), the British-Italian co-production was released at the height of the “giallo”era, although it offers its own unique, moody spin on Italian mystery with plenty of suspense and gothic atmosphere to spare.
This screening will be hosted by guest curator Osgood Perkins (LONGLEGS, THE MONKEY), who will join us to introduce the film. DON’T LOOK NOW was digitally restored in 4K from the original camera negative in 2023, under the direct supervision of cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond.
Still grieving over the accidental death of their daughter, Christine, John (Sutherland) and Laura Baxter (Christie) head to Venice, Italy, where John’s been commissioned to restore a church. There Laura meets two sisters who claim to be in touch with the spirit of the Baxters’ daughter. Laura takes them seriously, but John scoffs until he himself catches a glimpse of what looks like Christine running through the streets of Venice. With Sharon Williams, Hilary Mason, Clelia Matania.
“This haunting thriller and study of the psychology of grief is one of the most accomplished, and most troubling, films by the British director Nicolas Roeg.” (The Times UK)
“Every frame is calculated perfection.” (Little White Lies)
“A devastating portrait of grief, a master class in disjunctive editing and a haunting disquisition on the use of the color red.” (Los Angeles Times)
“It’s a ghost story; it’s a meditation on time, memory and the poignancy of married love. And it’s a masterpiece.” (Guardian)
“Nicolas Roeg’s 1973 film remains one of the great horror masterpieces, working not with fright, which is easy, but with dread, grief and apprehension.” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times)
