The robbery should have taken ten minutes.
Eight hours later, it was the hottest thing on live TV.
And it’s all true.
Based on the true story of a 1972 Brooklyn bank robbery that went awry, Sidney Lumet‘s Oscar-winning drama chronicles a truly unique New York City story that takes place on one hot, summer afternoon. Unlikely burglars Sonny and Sal (Al Pacino and John Cazale) attempt at thievery goes wrong from the get-go, starting with the fact the bank they choose to rob has almost no money. Things go from bad to worse as tensions rapidly escalate into a hostage situation and stand-off with the police. As Sonny’s motives for the robbery are slowly revealed and things become far more complicated, the heist turns into a volatile media circus. With Carol Kane, Charles Durning, Chris Sarandon, James Broderick.
“Framed by great work from director Sidney Lumet and fueled by a gripping performance from Al Pacino, ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ offers a finely detailed snapshot of people in crisis with tension-soaked drama shaded in black humor.” (Rotten Tomatoes)
“‘Dog Day Afternoon’ is possibly the most perfect entry among the dozens of great gritty Seventies movies that provided me with a durable memory library of cinematic brilliance.” (National Review)
“Speaks to a particular moment in an edgy early 1970s New York City — a post-Stonewall city of people figuring out identities, and bubbling with anti-establishment anger and a nascent culture of exploitation media.” (Salt Lake City Weekly)
